Display Abstract

Indiana is home to three major research universities: Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame. Research@Indiana 2000 showcases high performance computing and communications applications developed at these universities in science, engineering, medicine, the arts, and informatics. Research@Indiana also highlights some of the economic and educational benefits that have accrued from Indiana's growing stature as a force in information technology innovation.

The State of Indiana, known as the crossroads of America, is now becoming the crossroads of the world in high performance networking. The Abilene Network Operations Center (NOC) and Global Research NOC are located and managed in Indiana. Indiana is also home to several large and important academic supercomputers typically with multiple entries on the Top500 supercomputer list (http://www.top500.org/). Researchers at Indianas universities are creating the high performance computing technology that will be the foundation of tomorrows most powerful computers, just as researchers in this state have been key contributors to the development of todays computational grids. Indiana is also a center for cutting-edge research programs in the areas of massive data storage and virtual reality.

Research@Indiana features demonstrations in the areas of problem solving environments; HPC systems research; applications of high performance computing, communications, and massive data storage; virtual reality and advanced visualization; and e-commerce and interface design. Some demonstrations include interactive classes taught from the booth with digital video as teachers in Dallas interact with their students in Indiana. In addition, the Research@Indiana virtual poster session describes dozens of innovative information technology services, systems, and applications.
