GeoMapper

Optical instruments are producing images that dwarf the capabilities of off-the-shelf image viewing tools. GeoMapper permits easy travel across very large image spaces, segmenting images into tiles and creating multi-resolution versions of each. Running on a commodity PC with RedHat Linux, we take advantage of the significant amounts of texture memory found in low-cost graphics cards and are able to interact with images that are 20K x 20K. Information from multiple image sources can be combined in translucent layers or as insets into the overall image.
