Pervasive Technology Laboratories to participate in "Research in Indiana"

Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana University, launched in August 2001, was established with a five-year, $30 million grant from the Lilly Endowment. Indiana University's participation in SC2002 will feature the Pervasive Technology Labs.

The mission of Pervasive Technology Labs is to research the diverse aspects of pervasive computing that will drive the 21st century economy and to act as a catalyst in building Indiana's IT sector through technology transfer, commercialization of innovations produced in the labs, and joint research and development partnerships with industry. Technology developments and scientific discoveries of the Labs, coupled with other research activities at IU, are helping to create new businesses, infuse new technologies into existing businesses, and attract new companies to Indiana.

Presently, five (of what will ultimately be six) world-class research laboratories have been established, each focusing on distinct but related areas that underpin the pervasive computing environment:

  • The Community Grids Lab, directed by Dr. Geoffrey Fox, a pioneer in the development and application of parallel computers, focuses on grid computing, integrating peer-to-peer computing with distributed processing, and parallel computing, converging IT research in the areas of architecture and middleware for computing grids.

  • The Open Systems Lab, under the leadership of Dr. Andrew Lumsdaine, focuses its research on open source software and software interoperability -- technologies that allow communities of experts to develop and share standard protocols, processes, and tools and to evolve them in a collaborative and decentralized environment.

  • The Visualization and User Interaction Lab, directed by Dr. Polly Baker, investigates the design of software environments for use in the visual exploration and analysis of data, especially for complex problems involving heterogeneous data sources.

  • The Advanced Network Management Lab, led by Steven Wallace, the veteran network technologist who spearheaded the implementation and design of the Internet2 Abilene network, is working to develop technology to help manage the convergence of data, video, and voice over the Internet.

  • The Knowledge Acquisition and Projection Lab, under the leadership of Dr. Donald F. (Rick) McMullen, concentrates on the targeted, in-depth application and integration of core technologies to address important real-world needs. As the first externally funded lab affiliated with Pervasive Technology Labs, this lab is charged with developing more efficient maintenance systems for the United States Navy. This will reduce costs, increase system up time, and, ultimately improve military readiness.

Dr. Dennis Gannon, internationally known for his work in advanced scientific computing, is the science director. Dr. Michael McRobbie, IU's vice president for information technology, is the CEO. For more about Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana University, see:
