Table-top Display and Free-hand User Interaction

Sitting together around a table is a preferred approach for many data exploration or decision-making tasks. We have constructed a display where a top-mounted projector throws imagery onto a horizontal table. Users interact with the by manipulating tools decorated with reflective tape. Infrared light bathes the scene and a top-mounted camera captures the movement of the reflecting symbols. Image-processing algorithms, trained to recognize the tools, parse the video to locate the position and orientation of each symbol, triggering user events in the display application.
