Rose-Hulman Ventures Promotes Innovation

Rose-Hulman Ventures, a technology-based incubator and product development center created in 1999 with a $29.7 million grant to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology from the Lilly Endowment. Rose-Hulman Ventures (RHV) combines technical excellence, capital resources, and an entrepreneurial spirit to accomplish economic development objectives. RHV's mission also includes creating increased career opportunities to retain new engineering graduates in Indiana.

Rose-Hulman Ventures provides access to the full range of services needed to move innovations into the commercial marketplace. These services include traditional incubator services such as office/lab/production space and business and communications services. RHV also provides the expertise needed for technological enhancement of the innovation and the development of business and marketing plans to move the innovation into the commercial marketplace. In addition, RHV offers seed venture capital opportunities for innovations that show particular commercial promise and strong potential to contribute to the Indiana economy. Twenty-eight companies are partnering with RHV to stimulate economic growth in Indiana.

Our technical edge begins with the institution that gives us our foundation: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. For the fourth consecutive year, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is ranked No. 1 by U.S. News and World Report magazine among all colleges and universities that offer the master's as the top degree in engineering.

Infrastructure

Computer infrastructure, reception, and office and laboratory/production space are available at our 35,000 square foot facility located in Terre Haute, Indiana.

New Product Development Labs

Our experienced project engineering staff provides technical support through the New Product Development Labs. The New Product Development Labs offer a multidisciplinary approach to the design, development, fabrication and testing of new product prototypes that can increase the competitiveness and productivity of your business.

Entrepreneurship and Business Planning Group

The Entrepreneurship and Business Planning Group provides assistance with business plans, marketing plans, market research and analysis, management development, product service, distribution, research, and educational programs. Rose-Hulman Ventures also can provide start-up packages and assistance in accounting, legal, and human resources.

Venture Capital

Rose-Hulman Ventures is the only technology-based incubator that has its own venture capital fund as an integral part of the incubator. There are two ways that Rose-Hulman Ventures can provide financial assistance, (1) through direct participation in the technical or business development of a clients' business or (2) with a cash investment through our Success Fund.

Rose-Hulman Ventures' Impact on the Indiana Economy

Rose-Hulman Ventures is the focal point that Indiana needs to develop, attract, and retain high-growth, high-tech businesses that will provide career opportunities for its citizens and keep engineering students in Indiana after graduation.

Rose-Hulman Ventures is having considerable impact on the state's efforts to become a high-tech leader by the year 2005. According to the Indianapolis Business Journal, Rose-Hulman Ventures participated in 11 of the 25 largest 2001 Indiana venture capital deals (ranked by value of deal) and held the 6th position out of 11 Indiana venture capital firms (ranked by capital under management). RHV supports Indiana's deals between the $50,000 and $1,000,000 range with investments in 2001 totaling $3 million in early stage and established technology companies.

Role of students at Rose-Hulman Ventures

Part of our mission is to provide unique, valuable educational experiences for students and faculty. Multi-disciplinary teams of undergraduate/graduate students are significant contributors to the technology and business development activities of our clients. The teams are lead by our experienced full-time engineering project managers or Rose-Hulman faculty members. Over 200 students from Rose-Hulman, in addition to students from Indiana University, Indiana State University, DePauw University, and Saint Mary of-the-Woods College agree that working with a client throughout a project's development, from concept to implementation are valuable lessons learned. The students receive real-world experiences while clients benefit from the resources of one of the finest engineering institutions in the country.
