Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Focuses on Undergraduate Education

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is one of the nation's few private colleges that specializes in undergraduate engineering, mathematics and science education.

Rose-Hulman has earned a reputation as one of the nation's leading independent colleges because of its educational philosophy that focuses on small classes, outstanding teachers, and an innovative curriculum, which are supported by modern facilities. The Rose-Hulman campus is located in a suburban area about five miles east of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Rose-Hulman's Reputation Attracts Academically Talented Students

Rose-Hulman accepts only the nation's most academically talented students. The college's 2002 freshman class has an impressive 1300 average SAT score which ranked them in the top seven percent of all high-school seniors who took the SAT or ACT last year. More than 90 percent of the students at Rose-Hulman graduated in the top fifth of their high-school class.

Rose-Hulman is ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report magazine for the fourth consecutive year as the nation's best college that offers the master's degree in engineering as its highest degree. The 1998 issue of the Kaplan/Newsweek Guide to College listed Rose-Hulman as one of the nation's hot colleges. Rose-Hulman is among the nation's most interesting colleges, according to the editors of a new college guide published by Kaplan and Simon and Schuster. The guide describes Rose-Hulman as "a science powerhouse" and a college where a degree holds a prestige few other schools can match.

Undergraduate degrees are awarded in applied biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science and software engineering, electrical engineering, economics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, optical engineering, and physics.

Master's degrees can be earned in biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering, as well as in optical engineering and engineering management. Classes leading to the master's in engineering management degree are offered in Indianapolis, Bloomington and Terre Haute.

Outstanding Teachers Nationally Recognized For Their Innovative Ways to Improving Learning

Rose-Hulman prides itself in offering outstanding personal attention to the needs of its student that is illustrated by our student to faculty ratio of 12:1. Rose-Hulman faculty is outstanding teachers and innovators. Six Rose-Hulman faculty during the past three years have been honored as Fulbright Scholars.

Special programs offer Rose-Hulman faculty and students the opportunity to work as teams to use the latest technology to help business and industry create new products, processes and services. Rose-Hulman Ventures, which was created by a $29.7 million grant from the Lilly Endowment, is increasing high-tech economic development in the state and creating new educational opportunities to ensure that more Rose-Hulman graduates will begin their careers in Indiana.

The $6.7 million John T. Myers Center for Technological Research with Industry is serving as the home for a national model for project-based, undergraduate education programs.

Rose-Hulman offers a unique commitment to the humanities within an engineering, mathematics and science curriculum. Humanities courses in technical communication, engineering ethics, economics, political science and literature fulfill Rose-Hulman's commitment to graduate a renaissance engineer or scientist.

The engineering management graduate program integrates state-of-the-art technology with management principles. The program is designed to help engineers who want to enhance their management skills for use in technology-based businesses.

Graduates in Demand by Business, Industry and Top Graduate Schools

For more than 25 years, Rose-Hulman has maintained a nearly 100 percent placement rate of its graduates. The average starting salary for 2001 Rose-Hulman graduates was $51,000.

Graduates are highly sought after by a variety of businesses from Fortune 500 companies like General Motors and Eli Lilly to high-tech firms and new entrepreneurial companies. Rose-Hulman seniors are also accepted to the graduate, law or medical school of their choice.

$75 Million in New Facilities

The largest campus improvement project in school history is under way at Rose-Hulman. During the past six years, more than $70 million in new academic and student services facilities have been constructed. New buildings include the Olin Advanced Learning Center, the John T. Myers Center for Technological Research with Industry, the Sports and Recreation Center, Oakley Observatory, and a new residence hall that will feature an innovative environment to enhance the academic success of students in their sophomore year. The new White Chapel was opened last fall. Construction on Hatfield Hall, a new $14 million theatre and alumni center is nearing completion.

The campus improvements are the result of the largest development campaign in Rose-Hulman history. The $200 million Vision to be the Best campaign has successfully raised funds for Rose-Hulman at unprecedented pace for the past seven years.
