Research in Indiana 2003 at SC2003!

The Research in Indiana tradition continues this year, with the University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, and Indiana University teaming up once more to demonstrate new innovations and accomplishments in advanced information technology. The activities that have been staples of previous displays are all in evidence in abundance – Purdue's accomplishments in IT and engineering, Notre Dame's accomplishments in computer science, and IU's accomplishments in networking, grid- and supercomputing.
2003 marks a turning point in the roles that Indiana, Purdue, and Notre Dame play in the State of Indiana, the nation, and the world. All three universities have won major grants that place them at the lead of our nation’s efforts to develop new computer technology:

  • Notre Dame has been awarded a grant as part of the DARPA High Productivity Computing System for their role in the Cascade project.

  • Indiana and Purdue have been jointly awarded an NSF Terascale Extension grant, linking the two universities' facilities into a new distributed system called “IP-grid,” linked to the TeraGrid.

The state of Indiana has become home to significant parts of the efforts to make the nation's vision for cyberinfrastructure a reality, and to build the advanced computing systems of tomorrow! At the same time, all three universities are transferring new technology into routine use in ways that help the US economy and that of Indiana especially.

Research in Indiana this year centers on three themes:
