The Mooney laboratory is focused on research and training in
computational biology. Specifically, researchers characterize
and predict the function and expression of proteins and seek
to understand the effects of genetic variation using
computational methods. In collaboration with the Scientific
Data Analysis Lab of the Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana
University, bioinformatics applications and Web services are
being developed to provide an application interface for
genomic data and related analysis tools.
One application provides protein structural annotations of both
mutation data and single nucleotide polymorphims (SNPs),
enabling researchers to predict potential molecular effects of
an arbitrary mutation. Further developments include a website
(http://www.mutdb.org/) and a Web services interface which
has extended two commonly used applications to communicate with these services enabling researchers
mutation structure interactively. Future applications include functional analysis of protein structure data
analysis tools which will be deployed through the lab's website, http://www.lifescienceweb.org/.
