Advanced Virtual Manufacturing Laboratory

The Advanced Virtual Manufacturing Laboratory (AVML) was born as a collaboration between the Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing Laboratory at IUPUI and Advanced Science and Automation Corp. AVML is a Web-based training program for high-tech machine tools as well as a platform for an integrated, multi-media, and interactive instruction delivery.

The system provides the following training functions for users via the Internet: (a) interaction with a fully-functional virtual CNC machine, including real-time machining of parts (b) training on key operating procedures of the CNC machine, (c) intelligent virtual tutors for educating the user about CNC machining and CNC machine tools as well as provide assistance with hands on training on the virtual machine.

The AVML enables colleges to easily and inexpensively provide students with effective, safe, and highly accessible training on advanced machine tools. The AVML can also be used by machine tool manufacturers to provide online training, eliminating and/or reducing the need for on-site/live training classes. Finally, the system can be used by industry for process verification and optimization. The AVML can run on Desktop or laptop personal computers as well as more sophisticated, fully-immersive virtual reality environments such as the CAVE.
