Storage at Indiana University
Research File System (RFS)
Indiana University's Research File System (RFS) helps users get to their files from anywhere. Access is available via a web interface, OpenAFS clients on most platforms, sftp, and samba, which allows users to easily map drives for drag and drop functionality and interactive use on Windows and other platforms.
RFS is a resilient system. Its meta-data servers have built-in redundancy and reside at geographically separate campuses. User data is backed up to IU's Massive Data Storage System, which stores data redundantly at geographically separate campuses. Read-only copies of user data are made every evening and provisioned to users so they can readily access recent versions of their files.
RFS is an excellent service for collaboration. Users can share access to files and directories with each other with a high degree of flexibility and trust relationships can be created for long-term collaborations amongst more than one institution.
