Effectively connecting scholars and researchers with computing, storage, and networking resources requires flexible, reliable middleware that makes the best possible use of computing resources. Indiana University is involved in several middleware research and collaboration initiatives that are enabling new forms of research, pedagogy, and creative activity. By building a common cyberinfrastructure of authentication, web portals, common collaboration and learning environments, content delivery systems, and distributed high performance computing, Indiana University researchers are empowered to devote more focus to their research and creative activities. These middleware components provide a stable, common platform for component reuse, minimizing potential duplication of effort across large national and international collaboration projects. In partnership with the National Science Foundation NMI, IBM, Mellon Foundation, and the Sakai and Kuali partnerships, Indiana University is helping to build the national cyberinfrastructure of the future.
